VNG IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam Triathlon Race Is On In Vietnam

Half-IRONMAN event in Danang is the newest destination race in Asia

DANANG, VIETNAM — Vietnam officially becomes the 30th country to host an IRONMAN event via the VNG IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam Triathlon. The race, the biggest international triathlon event ever to be held in Vietnam, is set to happen on May 10, 2015 in the coastal city of Danang, well-known for its pristine beaches, UNESCO world heritage sites and numerous tourist attractions.

The IRONMAN 70.3, also known as the half-IRONMAN distance triathlon, is among the world’s most exciting races, attracting hundreds of thousands of athletes and supporters year-round. The Vietnam inaugural race boasts over one thousand registered participants representing 54 countries, making this race the newest sought-after destination race in Asia and with one of the mostinternationally-diverse field of athlete participants ever for an IRONMAN 70.3 event.

Over 30 professionals athletes of various nationalities are expected to arrive, including 2008 IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion Terenzo Bozzone, 2015 IRONMAN 70.3 Asia Pacific Champion Tim Reed and triathlon hotshots Caroline Steffen and Josh Amberger, representing one of the deepest fields of professional athletes assembled for an IRONMAN 70.3 event in Asia.

Not to be discounted is the strong participation from the Vietnamese community, which includes VNG CEO and co-founder Le Hong Minh, Novagroup CEOLe Thi Thu Thuy, Luala CEODo Ngoc Minh, TMG Chairman and CEOTran Trong Kien, Minh Long CEOLy Huy Sang,McDonalds Vietnam Chairman Henry Nguyen, Collagen Adiva CEO Tran Quoc Dungand 2011 Miss Universe VietnamVu Hoang My, among others. Also participating are charity teams led by Team Britain, comprised of David Lloyd, Graham Knight and Frederik Farina. Team Britainwill be participating in the race’s relay category to raise awareness and funds for Newborns Vietnam. Based in Danang, Newborns Vietnam is a charity that works to reduce infant mortality in Vietnam by providing specialist British training for neonatal nurses and doctors, as well as life-saving equipment.

Danang, Vietnam’s third-largest city, will play host to the inaugural VNG IRONMAN 70.3. Situated along an immaculate 30-km stretch of white-sand beach within 100 km of three UNESCO World Heritage Sites (including the Imperial City of Hue, Hoi An Ancient Town and the My Son ruins), Danang is a bucket–list destination for travelers with its mix of cultural attractions, famous cuisine, beautiful beaches, world-class golf courses and award-winning resorts, making it the perfect venue for this major sports tourism event.

The race will have a fast and scenic course that includes a 1.9km swim in front of the beautiful Hyatt Regency Danang Resort and Spa (host hotel and race central), a two-loop 90km biking ride with a course that will take participants along Danang’s pristine coastline and by some of the city’s key landmarks and a 21km out-and-back flat run passing many of Da Nang’s famous beach resorts before finishing at the foot of the legendary Marble Mountains. With tropical conditions, this warm-weather event is the perfect mid-season race to prepare athletes for their summer IRONMAN events.

The VNG IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam also serves as a qualifying race for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Zell am See-Kaprun, Austria. Twenty-five age-group qualifying slots are at stake, along with a US$15,000 prize purse for the event.
